Who is behind it?

Bag2Gate is a service of CofJC Inc. in Kyoto, led by founder and Representative Director Kyo Fujioka (Kyoya Fujioka).

Opening hours, admission and the night-illumination dates on this site are checked by hand against the official Kiyomizu-dera website, most recently on . Kyo also goes to Kiyomizu-dera to see how crowded it really is, and compares that with the score on this site.

How we calculate the crowd score

The score is our own estimate from 0 to 100. It is not a head count and not an official figure from the temple. Nobody counts people from the live camera; we only show it so you can see for yourself.

What goes into it

Time of dayOur hourly pattern for the temple, in Japan time. Weekdays peak 10:00–16:00; the first hours after the 6:00 opening are the quietest.
DaySaturdays, Sundays and Japanese public holidays use a busier pattern. Holidays come from the Cabinet Office calendar.
SeasonPoints added in busy seasons (table below).
Night illumination+40 from 17:00 on illumination days.
Rain−10 while rain is observed in Kyoto now, −20 in heavy rain (Japan Meteorological Agency, checked every hour).

The score is the hourly pattern plus the season and illumination points, minus rain, kept between 0 and 100. It is worked out again every minute in your browser; the weather behind it updates every hour. If the weather can't be fetched, the score leaves rain out and the page shows Kyoto's monthly averages instead.

How do you know if something is up to date?

Anything we update by hand shows a "Last checked" date next to it. Live values show the time they were observed or calculated, in Japan time.
